An old king gives away his kingdom and expects to keep his crown. He banishes the one daughter who loves him and trusts the two who flatter him. He is stripped of everything, and in the storm he finally sees what he could not see on the throne.
King Lear is widely considered Shakespeare’s greatest tragedy. It is also one of his hardest plays to read and one of the hardest to stage well. This evening is built to get you inside it.
From the rehearsal room to your screen
I’m in Austin Shakespeare’s staged reading of Lear, at the Long Center. I'll be playing the Duke of Albany. He is the husband who stands by while his wife and her sister destroy their father. Then he becomes the man who calls the play’s villains to account.
